Given that we are not only an ageing but also a relatively polite demographic I imagine both players will be deferring to the option they don't like:-
"If you want cards let's use those"
"No,no if you want tokens let's use those"

Sometimes you don't play the game but you play the player.

There is a saying in France for such kind of situation : « when the 120KG Guy speaks the 60KG one listen carefully »

No big issue sticking with cards close to currents size. I was thinking smaller is neater to sit behind a general.  But then I prefer the discs.

PCDS = Pre Card or Disc System
Each player is equiped with a pint of beer.
Deployment is simultanoeus.
First to deploy fully gets to choose which to use of cards or dice.
Spillage during deployment gives the choice to the opponent.
In the event of a tie, repeat the process.
In the event of multiple ties you won't be in any fit state to use either, so who cares!
