Intercept during the Charge Phase

A mounted unit 3 elements wide wants to intercept a charging mounted enemy unit by moving into a 2-element wide open space between 2 friendly units. The enemy unit has the initiative.  Can the intercepting mounted unit drop back an element to fit into the 2-element wide open space?

No, that rule only applies to charges.
