Quick (hopefully) question from a recent comp game against Ray - asking as I think Ray wasn't sure we did this right.

Bases facing up the picture are legionarii with ME, bases facing down the picture are Long Spear (honest, not bowmen 😉 ). Can base A be an overlap (supporting file) for the fight against Spearmen file B on the basis that it is not contributing to the combat of the base in front of it?

Base A is not contributing to the fight (an engaged base), but is part of the file. On that basis it cannot be a supporting file.

If the file was not fighting to its front, then yes it could be a supporting file as it meets the requirements of p87.

Cheers.

I think in this case the issue in question was in not thinking about files but thinking in terms of bases.
