Hello,

i am trying to understand the difference between Equites and Equites Illyricani.
The Noticia does not seem to make a difference between those.

What units, as per example would these be in the Noticia?

FWIW the Notitia lists 23 units of Equites Illyricani.

The classification is to allow for some of those and other Equites designated Dalmatae or Mauri on the possibility that these were more missile focused and equipped as other Equites.

Also, the Notitia is a problematic source that at best shows where the bureaucracy thought units of the army were at a particular time (and what that time was is uncertain) - it isn't actually a great source for writing an army list.

But for painting shields of the army it's absolutly fabulous! ;)

Best regards.
