some players say that the general is located where he is on the table.

On page 45 of the rules it says he can be alone on the table or in a file, behind or in front. he is then with the rearmost bases or front base and the distance from other bases the measured from that base.

If he has to be displaced, it is either to the front or rear or if not possible to the next file.

Otherwise to be moved a card has to be played.

can this be confirmed ?

thank you

Command distance is measured from the generals base I believe - not sure it specifically says it anywhere though, but I've not known anyone play it otherwise.

Yes.

Interested in what prompted the question as this seems quite clear IMO.

well when you test for the death of a general who is with a unit, the general leads the unit and dies.

- knowing that we do not put the general base in front but usualy behind and say or in one way or another make known that he is fiighting on the first rank.

where do you measure from the front rank of the unit or the rearrank ?

Its always from their base.
Their base is either:

1. alone,
2. at the back of a file
3. in front of a file not in combat
4. Fighting in the front rank of a file that is in combat (we all take short cuts on this at times and just declare then in bt really the base should go to the front of the fight.

Just measure from where he or she is at the time.

Timely clarry. This came up on Saturday and I'm glad we did it right.

I think we take the "short cut" as, IIRC, there is nothing saying the base should be at the front in the fight (unlike FoG which did) - unless, as ever, I have managed to miss it  8)

True enough I think it doesn't.
Left assumed from past you are correct.
Just says with file.

I will issue a clarry and build into vs 2 to make precise.

I'd be tempted to say you just declare it and still make all measurements from where the base actually is for simplicity (and I think how people tend to play it).

My thoughts exactly.
Put there if you want to or just decalre it.

I have always just left it at rear and marked it as in combat.

But it does now make me wonder what happens if I put him in the actual spot. In an infantry unit, takes up 2 infantry foot print. What happens if contacted to the side? Normally there would be more rank and file but now they are pushed back.
