Have archers with the Skutatoi in mixed units but the archers disappear if mixed units are not used - should they appear as their own TUGs in this case?

The archers do not dissapear. Those archer give the unit the "integral shooter" capacity .

The skutatoï unit was about 1000 men strogh . from memory 400 spearmen, 300 bowmen, 100 menvlatoï and some 200 "light infantry" . So in MEG you can represent that kind of swiss knife unit either as

1 unit spearmen + integral shooter ( my choice )
1 unit with a front rank spear + bow and a second rank bow only .

The only thing I do not know is why in solution 1 they are drilled and in solution 2 they are formed ...which makes a big difference .

The earlier Byzantine list can have both..
Pretty sure Nike used to be able to have them too. I have the figures.
Not a big deal really, but just a bit odd  - if they justify a TuG previously, why not now?

Only odd if they were justified in the first place - revisiting the list has presumably shown that they were not.
