Ambushes and Bluffs

I was wondering about the ambush rule. Firstly how exactly the bluff works.
Why are you allowed a bluff ?
Surely you either have an ambush or you do not !!
If you place an ambush card where an ambush is to be deployed
it's hardly a surprise and therefore not really an ambush !!
Why not if you have an ambush write it on a map ?
Realistically you have skirmishers, part of there job should surely be to approach terrain to see if any ambushes.

Maps are very open not abuse.
Hence the cards.

But how can u have a bluff ?
If you place the card where the ambush is then it gives the game away. If no map what about writing under card, which piece of terrain the ambush is in or behind. Place the ambush marker by your baggage.

Robin

I can see how you might have a couple of bluffs if you do really have an ambush, but appears a bit odd if you dont.

Oh I don't know.  You are looking at it from your perspective when its better to look at it from the enemy viewpoint.
They don't know if you have or haven't.

After 20 years+ of drawing deployment map in DBM/DBMM I miss that couple of minutes to formulate a plan. I always forget to put Ambush cards down it seems so rushed at deployment :-(

I get that Geoff ....
... but I don't miss having to umpire on them so often I must say.
A real umpiring catch 22!

I formulate a plan, don't need a map for that. Plan may not be a good one, but again a map does help there either  :P

I would love to name names from the old DBM days. Maps were a fantastic opportunity for the unscrupulous player to cheat! The one thing I'm sure of is that Geoff would have been a perfect gentleman.

For sure he is .... but I do recall having to rule on a game where the player had a nice map with accurate locations ... but interestingly when I accidentally turned it over,  on the other side it had a another identical map but with them in a different place .... he claimed that was his previous game but the terrain was identical .....  impossible situation to umpire the few who don't play fair.

We had a few quiet words after the game after his previous opponent told me the terrain in the last game ....  errr .... there wasn't any!

Ambush cards came from such fun experiences. Being prepared for the few .... for the benefit of the many ....
