The Diagram immediately before 4.J tells us the two points that must be 1 BW apart, although only point b is referred to in the rule text.

Am I right in thinking that the direction of the line ab is not constrained, as long as its length is 1 BW?

I would rule that the direction of the line ab should be the direction that the TuG ended up moving.
I am sure that both the wording and the diagrams could be improved.

What complicates this rule is when other things (UGs, impassable terrain or table edges) get in the way.

Is that the line joining the initial and final positions of point a, or perpendicular to the front edge of the moving TUG when it has completed its move?

Maybe a simplification would be good?

Which ? Mandatory run away seems simplest .

But does it make sense ?
