When a list says e.g.

Infantry 0 to 12
Upgrade Infantry upto half

Can you just take 6 Upgraded Infantry or do you need to take 6 Infantry and 6 Upgraded Infantry. I think the later ?

It is indeed the latter if you want the 6 upgraded.
