Hi to all

My question is whether there should be an upgrade in Artillery shooting at Kiels

Taking into consideration that despite ancient and medieval artillery being not so accurate, it would much easier for them to shoot with greater success blocks of infantry that cannot quickly manoeuvre such as Kiels?

Just a thought

Same argument can be applied to pike TuGs large dense target

The discussion may be an open one .Should the shooting be modified ? and yes many arguments come from REG and MEG is not REG. Still looking at proposed modifications might still be interesting

- one colour UP vs "large" units ( and what is large ) 3+ ranks deep ?
- One colour up if shooting in the flank of a unit ( behind the flank or rear )
- Is there shield cover when shooting in the flank or rear ?

For all these there are pro and against arguments . Against is mostly : simplicity sake ! But it works in REG so doable but do the players want it or not ?

As far as dense targets are concerned, Guns and Cannons are a very different prospect from Bolt Shooters.  Bolt shooters could pick off individuals (the Romans did this against the Gauls in one of Caesar's sieges).   Shooting at deep targets doesn't really affect bolt shooters.  With a gun or cannon it certainly does.

As far as rule changes goes, they never can be considered in isolation.  For example, I would downgrade heavy artillery shooting a colour, but give it a longer range in combination with upgrading it against deeper targets.

Better shooting against the rear of targets has been considered.  Often when it does occur, it occurs against targets which are rear ranks of UGs in combat(which arguably might be considered a downgrade) and you can't shoot at ranks that are contributing .  Overall I think it was felt to be an unnecessary complexity.

Are you so sure ? Often we are shooting at the rear or flabk of an unengaged UG perhaps a charging UG and that mostly by SUGs but not always.

Also yes shooting at the rear of an engaged base that fights frontally is not allowed, but often units such as romans, gallic, most short spear infantry and not engaged in the melee as the bring nothing to it as second or third rank .

But that's a debate between simplicity and efficiency . I would really be curious as to what people want !

It might also open a debate on "do we want to change things in the basic rules or not" How do we want the rules - which are good - to evolve more complicated but playable or keep it strictly as it is ?

I will admit after a few years I wonder if some adaptation are not necessary or if we should just keep it as it is ! As long as the rules are the same for everyone

Anyway the rules have to be rewritten as the clarries are now a mess  8) They are useful and needed but it needs now to be "in the rules" if you understand my meaning so why not take it as an opportunity to have a serious look on how to do it
