I understand sub generals must be a permanent part of a UG?

I get the impression from the rules though it does not appear to be explicitly stated, that if the UG is involved in combat the attached general can fight in the front rank or stay in the rear.
If he fights in the front rank he adds 1 claim but may get killed. More importantly all orders to other UG's count as out of command
If he stays at the rear he can issue orders normally and is only at risk if the UG is routed.

Is the above correct or did I get it wrong?

you got everything correct except the bit about sub generals having to be a permanent part of a UG, they can be on their own if they wish, and they can leave a UG they are attached to if need be.

Pages 78 & 79, points 7 and 8 talk about location of generals.

Thanks for that. I think I misread point 7 on page 91 to mean sub generals had to be a part of a unit. Of course it actually says they have to join a command, not join a unit.

Indeed.  And for clarity you are with an UG if attached to a file.  Otherwise not.
