MeG at Beachhead 2022

Entoyment and Beachhead 2022 are proud to present: A Mortem et Gloriam Competition!

This event will be run over February 12th and 13th of 2020 at the Bournemouth International Centre and tickets 30 are available through the Entoyment Webstore  www.entoyment.co.uk please bring confirmation of your booking to make sure you can get into the show where wristbands are then issued.

Information on the wider Beachhead 2022 Event can be found at https://beachheadshow.co.uk/

Period and Theme

This will be a Classical Period event with any army allowed from the Classical Army Books.  If an army can take allies they are allowed to take allies from any permitted book listed. This will make the event very inclusive.

However, as a team on the South Coast a theme of the Punic Wars was suggested.  At the bottom of the event flyer are extracts from the Mortem Et Gloriam: Historical Enemies PDF and if you have an army which is included on those extracts then it would be fantastic if you could theme your entry army list!  However, if that isn't possible and you have another classical army, please still come along!

Army lists must be sent to james.mcmeiken@gmail.com by the 4th of February for checking.  As James will be checking the lists if you play him on one of the days he'll show you his list before the game.

The Competition

There will be four, three hours 10,000 point Maximus games played over the two days, one on each morning and one on each afternoon.  Where possible we will work in time to ensure you don't need to rush a game to wonder around the show as well.

The first round will be drawn randomly from pools of historical enemies. Rounds two to four will be drawn using the Swiss system drawn from the whole player group. Scoring will be as per the standard scoring for MeG competitions as outlined in the rulebook.

Things to bring with you

Whilst we only need half the players to bring a mat, if you can please bring a 6'x4' mat with you to ensure we have enough to cover the tables.

Please remember your own terrain and game aids too and at least one copy of your army list.

Prize Support

Prize support for the event will be provided by Entoyment and usually comes in the form of vouchers. More information on what prizes can be won will be provided closer to the event however; where we can Best Painted and Most Sporting Player are prizes we are always keen to reward as well as prizes for placing at the top of the competition!

Useful Information

The Bournemouth International Centre has its own car parks but several local outdoor car parks are close by. There are busses from the train station directly to the BIC.  There is some food served at the BIC and a number of restaurants and cafes and fast food chains are located a short walk away.

For those making a weekend away with their family, the Gardens, Beach, Shopping and Cinemas are very close to the event building and Bournemouth has many hotels to suit almost any budget.

For those staying over in Bournemouth who like a good curry out on a Saturday night there is a fantastic place with a road with plenty of free parking on it.

With all respect the following armies have no connection to the Punic Wars.

Thracian Lowland Tribes; Scordisci; Early German; Thracian Hill Tribes; Hellenistic Greek; First Servile War Slave Revolt; Second Servile War Slave Revolt; Early Seleucid; Late Seleucid; Pontic; Later Republican Roman; Bosporan; Scordisci; Dacian or Carpi; Pre-Islamic Arab; Jewish; Late Ptolemaic; Spartacus Slave Revolt; Parthian; Parthian Vassal States; Spanish - Sertorian; Spartan.

So if you want to comply to the theme that is Punic Wars I would suggest restricting your choice of list to the following:

Mid-Republican Roman; Highland Gallic; Lowland Gallic; Apulian; Bruttian; Lucanian; Later Campanian; Early Carthaginian; Sardinian; Siciliot Greek; Syracusan; Spanish - Celtiberian; Spanish - Iberian; Spanish - Lusitanian; Numidian or Moorish; Later Carthaginian.

The following just about qualify: Illyrian; Later Macedonian (if you take into account the alliance between Philip V of Macedon and Carthage).

The Punic Wars ended in 146 BCE, so Later Republican Roman is definitely not correct.

I am definitely up for this and clearly have no reason not to select a compliant army.

Morning,

I agree the recommended lists expand beyond the Punnic wars; the compromises were reached in order to not put off players with one army who may not come to an event with a super tight list selection as they didn't have the time or money to build something new.

In theory "Any Classical with any allies allowed in those lists is the official format"  but by asking players to bring armies om the enemies of the Republican Roman and Carthaginian armies we get a fairly broad spectrum of types of lists from Gallic Warband type to Hoplites.  Bring whatever build legal classic list you like that you will enjoy :)

The Carthaginians I had planned are a little later than they should be to be called "Punnic Wars"  but I should be able to.get a few more UGs to represent an earlier list and that was the sort of thing the group discussing what to select wanted to avoid for players who couldn't make thay switch.

As long as players are happy playing classical games then we are all good and first round we'll pair up traditional opponents so at least one game is nicely themed for as many players as possible.

Kind Regards

James.

Absolutely agree that we don't want to put off anyone from playing.  We want to be as inclusive as possible.

I am puzzled by your comment that your Carthaginian army is later than the Punic Wars.  Carthage was destroyed at the end of the Third Punic War, so you cannot have a Carthaginian army later than the Punic Wars.  The Romans are famously said to have ploughed salt into the ground - although they did later found a city to replace Carthage.

If you want an army connected to Hannibal - then both Bithynian and  Early Seleucid lists are valid choices.

Could this be organised as a Roman vs Carthaginian bash (as per Cross & Crescent) with other nations being allocated to balance the sides.

So, just to be clear, I can take any classical army?

Robin

It's supposed to be Punic Wars.
Its opened from Punic Wars and allows any Classical list to encourage players to attend. So only take non punic list if you dont have one.

marshalney2000

I suspect that despite entering I may have to withdraw. I have Burton two weeks later and two long journeys at this time of year might be one too many.

I'm confused Robin. Are you the organiser. The notes above say;

No im not the organiser, But you have only read half the advert.
The original idea was to have a Punic War event. However one or two people expressed interest but did not have an army in that category. Rather than not allow people to enter as they have limited armies Jersey James (The Organiser) has adjusted it to allow non Punic War armies to enter if that person does not have a Punic War army. He doesn't want to exclude anybody. So if you can bring Punic War then please do so. Its for fun and to encourage the game in the Bournemouth area.
