Foot DC, Flank attacks and claim cancellation

It was recently clarified that claim cancellations only apply when fighting to your front. For example, foot ME's claim is "+1 vs. any except El or Exp." My understanding is that the "except El or Exp" is a cancelling clause and only applies if the El/Exp is fighting to their front, so foot get their +1 for ME if fighting El/Exp to flank/rear. So far so good (I hope).

The issue is that the claim for foot DC is written a little differently: "If in 2+ ranks themselves: +2 vs. any foot; 0 vs. El, or vs. CL in good going; +1 vs. others"

If feels like the "0 vs El or CL in GGo" is effectively a claim cancellation and therefore should not apply to flank/rear charges - certainly for a flank/rear charge vs CL, and even foot ME get their claim vs. the flank/rear of El - but it's not written that way.

Do foot DC get a +1 charge claim (if in 2+ ranks of course!) when charging the rear of El or CL in GGo?

No.  They have no weapon claim against elephants....

Nothing to cancel....

unless I've missed a clarification if something is listed as "+1 vs. any except El or Exp." that applies in all circumstances. foot ME would never get +1 V El or expendables regardless of where they contacted them

claim cancellation are those marked with an * or noted as such on the QRS. Claim factors are not the default starting position, sometimes they only apply if fighting to the front. It makes it a pre-requisite to use such a claim not a subsequent cancellation.

or at least that is my understanding.

I am now quite confused.  :(

Let's take the simpler example of mounted polearm. In they charge they get "+1 vs any mounted except CL or LSp".

Am I correct in thinking that mounted PA do get the +1 vs CL or LSp if they charge the CL/LSp in the flank/rear?

no its my fault I had misread it and as the clarification is worded , yes ME foot and mounted would get their claims against flank rear of any opponents

but I'm not sure that is actually what the intention of the clarification wording was.

Assuming that was the intention...

Moving next to charging lancer: "0 vs El, BWg, or standing to receive** foot LSp, foot PA, or Pk; +2 vs others" (** = definition of standing to receive)

If CL charges standing to receive LSp/PA/Pk in the flank/rear, do they get a +2 claim? (I thought that claim cancellation only counting when fighting to your front means that they do.) Do they then also get a +2 for charging El in flank/rear? (I also thought that they do - in any case it should be the same answer as vs. flank/rear of standing to receive foot LSp/PA/Pk)

OK, this is another one that has potential just to end up with everyone confused and so I am going to lock it and ask that people have a bit of patience whilst we look into it.

We'll look to update and expand the existing clarification if necessary (personally I suspect it isn't quite covering what it was intended to).
