According to the QRS, you are never forced to charge if you would be down 3 on charge combat. Now imagine a situation where some files would be -3 on the charge but other files would only be -2 (maybe the opposing UG is missing some ranks to give a claim for example). Does the fact that some but not all of the files would be -3 in charge combat exempt the entire UG from being forced to charge, or do all the files have to be down 3 or more to not make it a forced charge?

If any would be -3 as (except for the 1BW thing) you charge with a whole UG and not part (basically).

Sorry, do you mean to say that if any files are not -3 then the entire UG charges, even those files that are -3?

Pretty sure he means

[you do not have to charge ] if any would be -3 because [="as"] you charge with a whole UG and not part (basically). (except for the 1BW thing) [referring to the rule where the unengaged part of an engaged UG can charge enemy within 1 BW].

Strictly speaking, that is a logical non-sequitur, but it's clear that the answer to the OP is only part of the UG needs to be at -3 to get the exemption, it doesn't all have to be at -3.

I see it now. Sometimes for an answer to be clear to me, you have to beat me over the head with it. (Hmmm: 2HCC vs. poor opponent, now would that be -3?)
