Building a army

Greetings,
First time on the message board and a total newbie to Meg.
My question is about min and max troop types. Lets say I am building a Magna size War of the Roses Lancastrian army .
How many TUG's do I get? How many SUG's?
Lets say I get a total of 10 Tugs (not sure how I would determine this either). The min and max for retinue bowman min is 6 and Billmen is 4 is this looks like all I would be able to have in my army, as this would fill up the 10 UGS. Am I looking at this right? Would Armies then have to be quite large to have a variety of troop types?
Any help would be great.
Thanks,

The next set of army lists (out 1st January) will have specific lists for Magna and Pacto.

Until then, take the Magna lists, maximums and minimums, multiply by 2/3 rds and round up.  Note the army lists quote the min/max number of bases (not UGs) and the UG size.

So in the Lancastrian English list the number of retinue bowmen is 6 minimum 36 maximum.   This becomes 4 min 24 max in Magna.  UG size is 4.    Bill men 4 min 16 max  becomes 4 min 12 max (strictly 11 but  the lists will round this up to 12).  Again UG size is 4.

Welsh spearmen min 0 max 9, becomes 0/6.  Because they are allowed UG sizes of 9 in Maximus they can have a UG size of 6 in Magna.

Hope that helps.

Hi

I'd just add a couple of points - they are things regular players are so used to that sometimes we forget to mention (if you already know them then apologies - no intention to be patronising).

You determine your army size by the number of points. Either 7,000 or 8,000 is recommended for Magna. That decision might be made for you if you are playing other people with an established preference or if you are going to competitions but if you have choice I would go for the higher number (8k) to get more flexibility in army design.

Then you have to decide how many points to spend on generals. That gets you a bit of control over terrain, possibly some scouting and most importantly cards for movement each turn (and having more cards than your opponent so that you get to move after he has finished can be a real advantage). But points spent on generals means fewer TUGs.

Then you have to buy the minimums. Then you have some decisions what you do with the rest of the points. The lists have more troops than you can buy with your points so you can choose and tailor your army in different directions (eg archer-heavy or man at arms-heavy in your example). This is when the Army Builder (Excel spreadsheet) is really useful for trying out different alternatives. Different alternatives can have widely differing numbers of TUGs and SUGs even for the same points.

Face the facts though -you will end up tinkering with your army later on. Even if you think you have designed the perfect army now and you buy all the figures and do all the painting in one batch ... three games in you will go "Oh, I need one more TUG of this type for balance" and you will be in the cycle of tinkering and painting extra units just like the rest of us. It's part of the fun!!!

hope that helps

Hi again. Just noticed something in your initial question:-

I think you may be mixing up bases and TUGs. The minimum for Billmen is 4 bases. A billman TUG in Magna is 4 bases so that minimum is one TUG of billmen.

Hope that helps! (... and again, apologies if you already knew that)
