Still lose half their infantry when they form mixed units (and the shooters in the second rank somehow become protected).

This seems different to the way other lists which have the option of mixed units function.

I think the Later Crusader mixed formations lose numbers as well - but not to the same extent. Can't think of any justification for the reduction in this list though to be honest.

Western Wie and Northern Zhou also have an overall reduction in numbers of infantry available when using mixed formations - definitely looks like a list design policy.

An inexplicable, erratically applied policy?

I'm struggling to think of a reason for the policy.

The reason is to ensure that an army using mixed formations does not benefit from being able to choose a greater number of shooting elements.   I resent the opinion that there is no explanation for this policy, a lot of effort goes into the army lists and please do me the courtesy of listening to the explanations.

The criticism that the policy could be applied more consistently is valid.

Green policy
A concerted effort to reduce lead emissions and keep the table green?

OK, I can see that as a reason and possibly not unreasonable. Problem for the 5 Dynasties is, IMO, that because the mixed formations are replacing all the crossbowmen and spearmen the overall number of infantry available falls quite significantly and I really don't see that as right for this list.

Yes, it is a tricky one.  Am open to suggestions.  Perhaps allowing a larger number but reducing some of the crossbowmen to unskilled (representing lower numbers) or a single rank?

martymagnificent

Perhaps only allow the crossbow bases to be replaced by mixed units so that if you want more infantry it has to be spear? You would probably have to remove the spear minimum in the Ten Kingdoms (so that you don't have to have mixed units and spear if you don't want) and perhaps increase the crossbow maximum slightly?

As my digging into Chinese stuff covers this I may chuck up a suggested revision in the near future - may end up being a bit wider than just the infantry as well ...  ;)
