Wondered what players thoughts were on the use of a WOR army and success likelihood in an open comp ?
I bought one (Yorkist) last year but have had no enthusiasm to paint it up yet. Is the Upcoming Skulls and Britcon the ideal place to use it, or is it likely to be a Lemon ?🍋🍋

Everything is good against the right opponent and terrain.   You pays your points and takes your chances!   I'm not sure I've seen one of these on the table at the club or in competitions yet.
Dishonour before defeat!

Might be the answer to your question Robin  ;D

Anybody want to buy a based and undercoated WOR army LOL as I have no idea if I will ever paint it

Seems like WotR is one of those that is ideal for a campaign game.  Whether those armies are good in open competition (in any rules) - they always seem a little bit fringe-ish.  Would love to see a campaign for them with MeG....

I used a Free Company (mostly dismounted knights, powerbows with stakes, some pole arms and some mounted knights) in a comp in Sydney, came middle of the pack. It wasn't completely rubbish (and I'd only used it twice before) but the problems I found were:

- if you come across a player with lots of infantry it means you've spent a lot of points on a powerbow which doesn't do much, except give you +1 range.

- I took stakes which I wouldn't take again to a comp. A lot of points to make a unit so tough no mounted will come near it, and opposing lancers just hit the dismounted knights anyway. Useless against foot too. Hard to put down, need a red card.

If I use it again I'd ditch the stakes and get more mounted troops.

Going back to mounted horse archers for the next comp ;)

So shooty mounted at Melee19?? We'll have to see if it can out-shoot, or possibly just ride down, my (lots of foot shooters) army.

I agree with pretty much everything you say about longbow armies. My current thinking would probably be to take only a few units of the longbow, without stakes, hope for some terrain and fill up the rest of the army with other stuff. Having said that I think you would have done better in our match in the last comp if I hadn't been lucky in the pre-game and forced you to play on a barren plain.

I find these types of amries works well with a heavy mix of Man At Arms on 6s.
Pretty solid vs anything.

Then have two drilled longbow in 8s.
Use drilled manouvre to get two of those in front of a decent target.

Not sure which variants have the drilled.

In an open competition you are always going to be narrow and likely to have a low TuG count. Neither of those things are necessarily bad in the hands of a great player but added to the lack of mobility makes this a very difficult challenge.  All IMHO

Actually, looking at what I still have to paint for my original choice (Post Mongol Russian with Golden Horde Allies) I think I'll have to go with something else, probably Graeco Bactrian, and use the Russians at Wintercon.
