Shoot at charger target
« on: March 27, 2025, 11:12:15 AM »
I'm not sure I'm playing the priority target of shooting at chargers correctly.

simple example: two UGs charge the same shooter's UG
question: how to determine the target of the shooter's file at the junction of the 2 charging UGs

must the charging player indicate which UG charges first?
P24 1C 5.2 "A single file may only shoot once and if there are multiple potential targets it must shoot at the charging base that first comes within 1BW"

Or should we use the base covers most of the frontage?
P93 7D 5 "If any enemy bases are within 1BW and directly ahead (ahead and directly to the front) then a file must shoot at whichever such base covers most of the frontage of the shooting file – if equal the shooter may choose which base to shoot at."

in simpler terms, is the shooter's target the first to come or the one who covers him the most?

Thank you for your help

You know I'd never even clocked the 5.2 bit  :o

The answer will be the base that covers most of the frontage as when shooting at chargers is done there has been no movement of the chargers yet and there is no requirement to move chargers in the order declared (or similar) so you cannot determine which first comes within 1 BW.

Thank you, I will apply
I think the end of the sentence will be deleted in an updated version

Hi Nik and Philippe,

in the case above if we are using your explainations then we should use one charger as a screen for the other one.
the shooting at charger is supposed to be at one BW , even if you can't reach them due to slowing effect  or dying before moving them :-(
and you can shoot at the charger if the target can skirmish or run away all along the path of charge.like you were in one BW.

the priority on targets in the shooting phase is different from the shooting at chargers in my understanding ( I may be wrong;-) )

All the best.

Gilles

Not sure what you are getting at in relation to the original question.

Shooting at chargers is only allowed if their path of charge goes within 1 BW of shooters and is done as if the target is at 1 BW but the usual target priorities apply (using the path of charge as the target if the actual bases are not at or within 1 BW of course).

I think the point is : if 2 TUGs do charge the same target, as the shooting is resolved before deciding which TUG charges first, the shooter may shoot and slow down one TUG that will never reach it or that has some loses and so could be defeated , so the second TUG can get in FIRST unscathed . One TUG covering the other.

It seems illogical but so it is allowed in the rules
