Meaning of "general fighting in the front rank"
« on: May 28, 2024, 01:34:22 PM »
Hi guys,

the KAB-Table states "general fighting in the front rank"

What does this mean, a general attached to the front base of an UG?

If a general is attached to an UG that is engaged in combat (rank is irrelevant in Pacto), the player may choose to "fight the general in the front rank".
This has several consequences.
Any UG except the UG that the general is attached to is treated as out of command while the general is fighting in the front rank.
The general must remain "fighting in the front rank" until combat ceases unless the player chooses to withdraw the general from the front rank.  If this is the case, the opposing player gets a KaB test on the UG.  This is known as the "snivelling little coward" test.
The UG gets a +1 (+2 for legendary generals) claim in combat.
If the UG loses a base then there is a risk to the general.
A general fighting in the front rank cannot gift or receive cards.

Hope that helps.

Does the +1/+2 claim for generals in combat only apply if the general is in the front rank?

We were playing last night and just counted the file getting the General claim  regardless of position?

Also a quick related question,
 - in one of our fights a general was attached to a file that broke, routing from combat:
      -  we played this as getting a KaB test on the general for losing a unit the general is attached to (as per Page 74 6.N.6
      - and then another KaB test when the remaining base made it's rout move before being removed, pulling the General with them

Was this correct?

Yes, the claim only counts if the general is fighting in the front rank.  The general can be attached to the UG and not fight "in the front rank".

An opponent can claim a KaB test for risk to general when the UG loses a base with the general fighting in the front rank.
An opponent can claim a KaB test for risk to general when the UG breaks with the general attached.
So yes, it is often the case that there will be two tests on the general - the first when the base is lost and the second for the rout.
