Society of Ancients Battle Day - Ilipa 206 BCE
« on: March 28, 2024, 11:14:46 AM »
Last Sunday played MeG Pacto at the Society of Ancients Battle Day, refighting Ilipa using MeG Pacto.  This was the decisive battle of the 2nd Punic War in Spain.
Details of the battle itself can easily be found on Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Ilipa
For a picture of the battle, go to Facebook.  https://www.facebook.com/groups/763293233817810.

When we refought the  battle we used the historic deployment.  This put the Romans on the wings and the Spanish in the middle, whilst the Carthagininan Africans were in the middle and the Spanish on the wings.  The elephants and skirmishing foot were in front of the main battle lines and the (small) amount of cavalry spread equally on each wing.

The battle was decided in four turns.  The Carthaginian elephants did more damage in KaB tests to their own side than they did to their opponents - just as happened historically.
The decisive action was when the Roman right wing charged into the Spanish allies of the Carthaginians and due to some good dice throws, broke them in the same turn.  As it happened the Carthaginians had rolled a 6 for heat (see the special weather rules below) so we stopped the game at this point (the Carthaginians had lost 6 TuGs already and the Romans had only lost 2 TuGs of cavalry).

We actually fought the battle on a 6'x4' (1.8mx1.2m) table using 80mm base widths (two bases side by side), so that a HBW was 40mm.  Four of us took part, Nik G with Dave (a newcomer) as the Carthaginians whilst myself and Adrian (another newcomer) played the Romans.

BATTLE SCENARIO:

The battle is fought on an open plain.
Deployment can either be historic or based upon scouting cards, but giving the Romans 6 to the Carthaginians 3 to represent Scipio's planning the night before.

Special weather rule:
From turn 4 roll a dice.  On a 6 the Carthaginians are combat shy in melee (not charge) due to thirst.  Turn 5: 5 or 6.  Turn 6: 4, 5 or 6.  Turn 7: 3,4,5,6.  Turn 8: 2,3,4,5,6.  Turn 9 automatic.  In the turn after the fatigue start rolling for a thunderstorm:  On a 6 storm starts, removing the combat shy.  Turn +2: 5 or 6.  Turn +3: 4, 5 or 6.  Turn +4: 3,4,5,6.  Turn +5: 2,3,4,5,6.  Turn +6 automatic.
The battle ends one turn after the storm starts.

Notes on forces:
The number of bases reflects the relative strength of the two forces.  The Carthaginians have a marginal points advantage, but will still find it challenging to win the battle, or even hold out until the storm breaks.
A lot of the skirmishers are single base UGs which is often my preference when playing Pacto.  The Roman legionaries are also single base UGs which allows them to extend their line more than the Carthaginians.  The melee expert gives them an advantage after the initial charge combat, particularly for the veteran legions.

I'm very curious on how you divided the command structure of the forces, which units with which commanders?

For the Romans, Scipio floated.  The Spanish allies were in the centre with the Romans equally divided left and right.

The Carthaginian commands were a bit trickier.  The allies were on the left with a general in charge of the cavalry on the extreme left and elephants in front of the allies.
The central command consisted of the African spearmen
The right command consisted of the Iberians and other troops under Carthaginian command
The remaining command on the extreme right consisted of the remaining cavalry.
