Hello,

The cataphracts in the list can be dismountable (Case A).

Alternatively, they can be replaced by dismounted troops at the selection of the army list (Case B).

The profile of these units is identical, except that dismounted cataphracts (Case A) are Tribal while dismounted troops (Case B) are Formed.

Is this a deliberate choice and, if so, is there a reasoning behind it ?

To go further with this (and maybe elicit an answer ;D), I was looking at the Early Tibetan list (4405), and I just noticed that it also has Formed Cataphracts who can purchase the Dismountable trait, except in this case they dismount as Formed Infantry.

Does someone have an idea as to the reason of this discrepancy ?

This is going to be changed for the 2024 Army Lists - so early warning here.

The "Dismounted troops" option will be restricted to 763 CE (and so will only appear in the Early Tibetan list) and cannot be used in a Tibetan ally contingent.   Cataphracts will still retain the option to have the dismountable characteristic.

This is because the mass use of dismounted infantry is only recorded in the invasion on the Chinese capital.  Whilst a lot of Central Asian cavalry would dismount on occasion, this is the only mass use recorded that I am aware of.  (If anyone has evidence otherwise, please let me know).

Thank you for that information Richard.

Can you tell us if it is intended to keep the dismounted Cataphracts as Tribal in Tibetan 4418 ?

Yes, they will remain Tribal.
