Just something bothering me

Impact or melee combat

The phasing player chooses the fighting FILE
The other player chooses which base/file defends

Most cases will be simple as per rules

Now if A TUG fights frontally and is aligned with the opposing TUG
But it is also fighting onit's flank and has not turned to fight it

Now the player chooses that file to fight

Supposing it is 2 rank deep and LS so the second rank contributes to the front ( should )

May the "defender" choose his flank file to defend ?

What about if the second rank does not contribute to the front ?

I believe that Page 84 section K of the PDF will answer your questions. NB this continues on the following page so don't forget to read the whole section  :D  Section L on the following page is also relevant.

Page 141 section E in the Compendium.
"The Roman Empire was not murdered and nor did it die a natural death; it accidentally committed suicide."

Also, questions on this sort of thing really benefit from a picture to illustrate as it can help framing answers. Adding a picture is not that difficult.

You could choose a file where you don't fight back, but the question is why would you ever want to do that?

K and L seem pretty clear.

It's important to distinguish:

2 bases in contact with the same edge

2 bases in contact with different edges

The OP example has both of these cases.

Yup, I think reading these and applying should give the answers.

Ok i'll try it differently :

Within each combat, the active player chooses the first of their files to fight, the other player
then chooses the next file, and so on until the combat is complete. Neither player can choose
which opponent they fight if there is a choice – this choice always belongs to the player
owning those files.

So the active players chooses a file, the non active player chooses the file that will defend . Sometimes it is pretty straight forward .

But if the designed file has contact to the front and to the flank it is still one combat

So my question is may the defender, the NON-PHASING player design as fighter any file including one file that's on the flank ?

If A if fighting C frontally, C is fighting A frontally and is one rank deep only so one base only . B is fighting C in the flank

Phasing player chooses C file to fight . So the phasing player who controls A and B may choose with which file to defend even if it is B that's on the flank or morelogically C can only attack A as it is to the front ? do you understand better the question ?

In your example the owner of A and B does not get to choose which to fight back with.

You appear to be misunderstanding this rule - page 84 K 3 (PDF)

When two bases are treated as being in combat contact with the same edge of an enemy base and have not fought, the player with two bases chooses which one will be fought.

My emphasis added.

A and B are not in contact with the same edge of an enemy base so there is no choice.

I think the rules are clear here.

Hopefully I have understood you question.
