Can the size of UGs be increased, say hoplites (6 to 8)to 12 or would that turn it in to a slogging match not wanting to play comp games just asking for a friend

It would change the game.  UG sizes are intentional.  What you do in the privacy of your own home is of course up to you...

Ok thank you for the reply, time to do more thinking too much time on my hands

I feel a bit hard done by with hoplites in 8s but not 9s.

If you are fighting 3 wide, an unlucky base loss can reduce that file of 2 to 1 so it loses its long spear bonus while you still have more than enough bases to be 2 deep everywhere.

I think the best solution to that is probably just run them as 6's instead of 8's. 2 wide 3 deep.

Moving a base across costs a card.

Having them in 6s means you need better generals to command the larger number of TUGs.

Better to make the armies bigger with the same TuG sizes.  Works up to about 15,000 points, afater that add a card per general per 5000.

One player did actually double all bases for a mega game and then treated a X as a single bae of and a skull as two off.  Try that.  It really does look amazing.  It was 28MM too.

And note the rule I only noticed yesterday - double KaB test for sacking of camp if "over 8 bases" (Not sure whether that means starting size, or current size...given the wording it looks more like the latter?)

Oops, didnt noticed that either as in the Camp Section this is not mentioned.
Indeed not clear about the size : original size or current status after any losses.
Can this be clarified please ?
Thx

I am sure that this was clarified and it was 9 or more bases as the original size, not current size of the UG.  However I cannot find the clarification.

This would be how I would rule it as an umpire.

UG sizes are very carefully set and cause big changes to game balance.
