1. Professional generals can hold one more card than their allowance - do they ever have to give it back ? Or are they only capped to USING their allowance only (so can use their best 3 cards if competent out of a hand of 4)?
2.Can a TUG pass through a friendly TUG so long as it has the move to do so? Or are there restrictions?
How can elephants pass thorough a pike block or cataphracts? I think I have this wrong
3. Is the +1 for superior troops to skirmish very optional or is it frequently used ?

Professional generals can hold 1 more card at the end of a turn and carry them all forward to the next turn without needing to discard any - Instinctive can only carry forward their normal allowance.

During a turn a professional general can hold any number of cards - although the maximum will effectively be 10 (talented bringing forward 5 and being allocated 5 from a Legendry C-in-C).

Basically a Prompted Action needs to be able to pass through completely, although TUGs can displace SUGs to make room, and an Outcome the units needs only partially enter another unit to pass through as long as there is room for them to fit beyond the unit they are passing through.

I'd recommend a good read of pages 109 and 110 on the subject on passing through - it seems to create quite a few questions  ;D

Always optional, gets used a reasonable amount of time in my experience.

Yes, I have struggled with the intent of the 'Passing through friends' rule also. It would be good to get further clarification.

My confusion is further enhanced by the notes to the 100 Years War English lists which specifically allow billmen etc to pass through longbowmen (and give versa) in the movement phase without causing KaB tests as a special rule that has to be notified to opponents. This implies to me an exception to the normal rule, wherever that may be, that presumably demands a KaB test, yet I can find nothing in the KaB test rules regarding passing through friends as a prompted action in the movement phase.

To put it simply:

1. If the unit in the left-hand side of the diagram at the top of p.110 passing through was a TUG of Gallic cavalry rather than the SUG of slingers would it be allowed to do so? and
2. If it can, are KaB tests required on either or both TUGs?

Most TuGs cannot pass through other TuGs as a prompted action.

9.3 H 3.  Says  "If allowed as a prompted action".  Therefore if allowed (by the list set notes) the restrictions in 3.1 to 3.4 must be met.

The bit in the list notes about not requiring a KAB test is perhaps a bit confusing and might be better removed.  It was intended to differentiate this movement from "forced charges" where a TuG may pass through another TuG and then a KAB test is required.

So simply 1. - no it can't and 2. doesn't apply.

Rules for passing through are poorly written. No-one seem to understand them at the first read.
There is a great subject about that I the following tread with a pdf file and all. It helps a lot.
