Welcome to the very first Mortem et Gloriam Players Podcast  Hopefully not the last 8) 8) 8)

Ray, Richard, Cid and Nik discuss the history of the wars that followed the death of Alexander the Great and look at the Macedonian Successor and Asiatic Successor lists for MeG, with a sample army from each of the guys for your consideration and/or derision. They also look at what figures they would recommend to build the armies, and offer some suggestions for reading up on the military history of the period.

Follow this link for the podcast - https://www.podbean.com/ew/pb-akre8-fdedf3

The lists discussed, figure suppliers and the suggested reading material will be posted below.

We'd love feedback on this our first attempt, and any suggestions for future topics or questions from players on the lists and/or rules that we might be able to answer would be welcome.

"The Roman Empire was not murdered and nor did it die a natural death; it accidentally committed suicide."

Here are the lists that the guys drew up - these are Maximus sized lists.

As noted in the podcast the following one has an error with the Mercenary Hoplites - you have been warned ...

"The Roman Empire was not murdered and nor did it die a natural death; it accidentally committed suicide."

And the same in Pacto version. Note that these are pretty much a straight conversion from the Maximus lists and so have not been drawn up to a specific points value. As you will see this has resulted in somewhat differing Pacto points for each list even though all were only just under 10k points in Maximus.

Books

"Armies of the Macedonian and Punic Wars" by Duncan Head; a must have - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Armies-Macedonian-Punic-Wars-Duncan/dp/1326256564 - if you buy only one book for this period this is the one to get.

Richard also recommended the following:

"The Wars of Alexander's Successors, 323–281 BC. Volume 1" by Bob Bennet and Mike Roberts - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B009EE19TO/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_d_asin_title_o06?ie=UTF8&psc=1
"The Wars of Alexander's Successors 323 – 281 BC. Volume 2" by Bob Bennet and Mike Roberts - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07QFFKL86/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_d_asin_title_o05?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And there are some more that cover the period:

"The Rise of the Seleukid Empire (323-223 BC): Seleukos I to Seleukos III" by John Grainger - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Rise-Seleukid-Empire-323-223-BC/dp/1526743760
"Antigonus the One-Eyed: Greatest of the Successors" by Jeff Champion - https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00OZ3HWEU/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1
"Antigonos the One-Eyed and the Creation of the Hellenistic State" by Richard Billows - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Antigonos-One-Eyed-Creation-Hellenistic-Culture/dp/0520208803

The following may be of interest partly as it has summaries of many battles in the Greek/Hellenistic/Republican Roman period but also because it was written as a tool for assisting understanding of ancient battles through wargames:

"Lost Battles" by Phil Sabin - https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00S84UI7U/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1

Other Recommendations

Very much recommended is The Society of Ancients - http://www.soa.org.uk/joomla/ ; the bi-monthly Slingshot journal is a great publication for the ancient/medieval period and joining can get you discounts from some suppliers. They also have a forum - http://soa.org.uk/sm/ - useful for asking questions and where you can get info from people such as Duncan Head the author of the must have book for the period.

Listened to Podcast last night good info but I found the sound quality was all over the place, sometimes I could not here the odd word and other times volume was low, this is not a dig and the programme was way better than I could even dream of, bit of a Technophob,

Great podcast, I really enjoyed it. Ray - your enthusiasm for MEG burned as bright as the sun and Richard - your easy going narration of the history was very easy on the ear. Nik - a very sharp appreciation of the rules indeed.  CID - its you I worry for as they've set you up a MEG tournament assassin and you know what that means ..... Pity Daventry will be a one day event - its a gie lang way from Perth for the day, Defo see you all at Skulls though where I will be praying not to draw the smiling assassin!
Well done all.
