I am sure i remember a conversation on this subject,

Was the resulting outcome= that the unit turning 90 degrees formed up as wide as the files where deep, based on the front figure with bases accruing backwards???

i.e a 2 wide 3 deep unit turning 90 deg left would end up 3 wide 2 deep, no further forward than the left hand corner of the front left base?

The notes in the QRS are "Expand either side as necessary to achieve a legal formation". 

The diagram on p61 states "Turn initially to be at least the same width as initial depth".

My view is that by the rules a cavalry unit 2 wide and 3 deep - i.e. 90mm will turn and then expand so that it becomes 3 wide and 2 deep.  If it turned to become 2 wide and 3 deep the QRS would be worded differently.  (I am not a fan of this, I think a 2 wide cavalry unit turning 90 degrees should stay 2 wide, but I won't lose sleep over it).

Thanks, You have used cavalry as an example of the application, presumably it applies to Infantry as well

Infantry is less of an issue because units can never be more than 4 elements deep, and element bases are not more than 1/2 BW.  Therefore a unit turning 90 degrees will always become 2 BW wide unless it contains 9-12 elements when it will become 3 base widths wide.
