Making Contact with Enemy UGs

Gents,

I am a beginner and have tried to find where in the rules it says if/how you can enter combat without charging after my last opponent said you could 'walk' into combat in the movement phase.

I see the 2020 Clarries state there are only four ways of making contact with an enemy UG. However, only three ways are listed! None of the three listed allow an UG to move into contact with an enemy UG that it is not already in contact with (even if only at a corner).

I am seeking to know if an UG can move to fight combat without charging or without already touching an enemy UG at a corner or edge.

The clarifications published 16-10-19 listed 4 ways to contact an enemy.  The fourth way was actually how to move when you were already in contact!
My guess is that Simon removed the fourth way - but then didn't correct the sentence at the top to say three ways.
Actually the clarification list is not complete, as you can also make contact by pursuing - although technically the pursuit becomes a charge - so I guess the clarification is correct.

As far as I am aware the original rules don't explicitly say that you cannot make contact with an enemy UG during the movement phase (but they don't say that you explicitly can either).

The only way to make contact in the movement phase as a prompted action would be by an MF1 move.  If in edge or front corner-to-corner contact then 9.4G 1 (p80) applies.

First of all big warm purple welcome!

It is charges (including pursuits which charge things) unless so close that you are touching hence those specific three choices. Made fully clear in the compendium.

So the principle in the design is that you always have to face a charge combat and a melee combat unless you are so close you are effectively embroiled already if either side wants to be.

Thanks Richard and Simon.

That's what I thought :)

I am new to MEG, but not to wargaming, and look forward to the Compendium. I really enjoy the overall 'feel' of the rules but find learning the finer details to be tricky. Placing all the rules in one document should help considerably, especially if they are written clearly and use diagrams.

I look forward to meeting you at CANCON Simon - we at last have a forecast of some rain so hopefully the smoke will have cleared by then!

Hi Steve,

Yes people find it quite an easy game to learn but a lot to master it.  Much more depth than at first thought. I've put a lot more diagrams into the compendium and am doing a lot of videos as well.  Have fun!
