The Medieval Germans #5616 get Best Knights and Knights, both with Dismountable. The Best Knights are Superior. Beneath both is a nots staring that "Knights dismount as formed close average..."
Does this mean that the Best Knights also dismount as Average? Or do they stay superior?
My guess is that they stay Superior, but I am usually wrong about this sort of thing, so...

FWIW, I have understood for years that German knights often fought dismounted and were considered better on foot than mounted. I was pleased (for list construction purposes) to see them get ME while mounted, but puzzled as th why they did not get it on foot but did get it mounted. I would have expected them not to get it mounted but to get ME on foot. I assume wiser heads than mine know why this is.
Miniature Wargaming is the only completely honorable form of warfare ever invented by man.

I haven't looked at that particular list, but dismounted knights usually get 2-haded cut and crush, which is better than melee expert.

Superior knights do dismount as average.

I have a vague feeling that the idea about them being better on foot applied to a period well before this list.
"The Roman Empire was not murdered and nor did it die a natural death; it accidentally committed suicide."

Swabian knights certainly seem to have had a reputation for fighting well on foot, based it seems on their performance at the Battle of Civitate in 1053 CE.
In the later period (15th century) many German knights became so impoverished that they couldn't afford a horse and were obliged to fight on foot.

Thanks, guys. Sounds like I save +/- 500 points and buy the average knights. YMMV
