Looking at using the Norse Irish as allies and was surprised the levies are compulsory.

Fine with a native force but I would presume as an allied warrior mercenary force this wouldn't count?

The local militia defending their homeland compared to a mercenary force in foreign service seems a little wierd..

Perhaps  note that compulsory levies are not compulsory in an allied contigent???

I think you make a good case.  There are other army lists where levied troops are compulsory which I intend to review.

I would think that it would rather depend on what the ally was representing.

Allies are not just an "allied warrior mercenary force" which may well be a more picked force, but can also be an normal army of the relevant "nation". Whilst the former may well not include levy type troops the latter would. I doubt you can apply a blanket approach.

Indeed, which is why I want to review them.

Thanks RJC.

Norse Irish allied continental is an interesting case.

Limit was the ships as much as anything else and with the allies on average on between 6 and 20 ships not likely to take the local dregs when space is at a premium onboard

Number of ship does not per se tell you anything about composition of forces only about the size the force could be - composition would be influenced by who was available for example, and that may well include a significant proportion of lesser troops. Basically, you need more info to come to any meaningful conclusion.
