How many characteristics can a unit have?

In a tournament how many characteristics can a unit have? I have a vague recollection from the old forum when there was the problem with the army builders not loading properly that in a tournament a unit could only have 3 characteristics even if the army list had more but in a friendly game you could have up to 5.

When I went looking for this today, there is nothing in the rules in the tournament section and nothing in the army construction section at the start of each army list.

Is there an official ruling on this?

There is no specific limit to how many characteristics a unit can have.  The army builder can cope with 5.  I don't believe the lists have any examples of more than 5 characteristics and only a handful with more than 3.
