base depth

Hy,

After the EMEGC at Athens I got a question.

One of the players had his chariots based on " deeper" bases as the models would not fit on 4 X 4 but needed 4 X 5 !

The discussion was if we should consider the 5 cm as the norm for those chariots or just consider them 4 Cm deep .

One of the players answered that it has been discussed and ruled that the basing was primordial and so it should be the 5 cm .

I will be candid , I did disagree because otherwise we will not buy nice big models anymore as they are sometimes too big  8)

Any opinions on it ?

The main idea is to have a common approach on this problem

Treating a base as being the depth that it physically is avoids certain geometrical problems that arise when you assume it is a different depth.

Having a deeper base does have some (tactical) disadvantages in the game (less space to evade into, larger contactable length on the flank), but do they really make that much difference?  Stick to smaller models if you want to be on the safe side - Chariot Miniatures and Essex in my (limited) experience will fit on a 40 mm deep base, albeit with some overhang by the floor and the horses' noses, and are still nice figures.

FWIW I think the more common issue is likely to be legacy 15 mm deep heavy foot bases from other rule systems.

When I field chariots on deeper bases I would explain to my opponent that the extra depth will not confer any advantage or disadvantage to either player during the game. Its a problem caused by scale creep that is largely beyond our control.

That gives a tactical advantage so we are discussing to have it threated as 2 CM in case of problems ( between continentals )
