Internal Allies and Regional List Variants

When an army list allows internal allies and has different regional sub-variants, can internal allies be drawn from a different region than the main force?
(e.g. a Late Republican Roman army from Italy taking an internal allied contingent from Syria, or an Italian States army from Florence taking an internal ally from Milan, etc.)

If no restrictions are mentioned then yes it can.
