A query arose on WhatsApp that led to a lot of confusion.  After consulting with Simon, the following rules have been confirmed.

1.  A Later Medieval Polish unit of Charging Lancer front rank and 2 ranks of Experienced Crossbow stands to receive a frontal charge.  If they shoot, can the enemy claim the +1 for Cv who shot.
ANSWER - No.  The front rank if the file has not shot.

2. A unit of ordinary Bow cavalry stands to receive a charge.  Can just the back rank shoot.
ANSWER - No.  If a file shoots, all eligible ranks must either shoot or not shoot.

Other related points:
You cannot claim against enemy charging Cv, Cm, Ch who shoot (Charge Only or Shoot & Charge characteristic).
Infantry claiming front rank shield cover cannot shoot, but rear ranks can.  This is a feature of the shield cover characteristic.

Apologies for any confusion caused on WhatsApp.

So have their been changes in the interpretation ?

As I read the point about the polish lancers, I must conclude that if I have a 6 base TUG of crossbowmen with shield cover, put them 3 rank deep I may not use the first rank to cover the 2 rear ranks who could shoot, same in a roman unit with ART, the front rank cannot use shield cover if the ART shoots from a rear ranks ! Correct ?

I'm gonna go with the clarification

'SHIELD COVER Page 208 1 replace "Files" with "Bases"; the intention is that formations with missiles and Shield Cover for some or all of their bases are not prevented from shooting with bases behind those using Shield Cover.'

seems to answer all your questions.
