Aligning confusion

An issue that has come up in my games from time to time is what happens when a supporting file on the end of a melee finds itself separated when the file it is supporting is killed in combat. It finds itself only in corner-to-corner contact only with an opposing file and nothing to its front.

1. Does the player get the option to move the file counting as unengaged, using an MF1 move or does it still count as engaged, in which case it isn't allowed to be moved?
2. Can the player 'align' the file with the opposing file, that it is in corner to corner contact with, in one of the following aligning sub-phases? The problem here is that the definition of 'align for combat' in appendix 2 allows for 'shifting front bases of files by up (but not including) 1BW. This is supported by rule B.5 on p.135 which specifically makes the point that it is not allowed to do a full 1BW shift but contradicted by the diagram on p.132 which shows  it as an option in the top right which states "these Romans could align to the left or do MF1 moves.
