Let us think about LS as they need 2 rank deep for the benefit of combat bonus,

I am sur the question has been asked but could not find it back , sorry,

A 2 rank deep LS UG has it's rear rank in terrain, not the first front rank. From memory of older discussions it seems that as the frontal base side is out of terrain and the front base unaffected, the UG has the full benefit of 2 rank deep LS,

But what would happen if part of the first rank would be in terrain, but not the front of the rank. My guess is that as the base is in affecting terrain, there is no benefit .

And also what about in the same case of a 4 rank deep phalanx with rear ranks in affecting terrain but not the front ranks ?

As I recall the argument from Simon, if the front edge of the base is out then the whole TUG counts as good going.

For combat purposes, it is the base edge in combat that matters (front unless hit in flank or rear).  If partly in terrain then it is affected by the terrain.  If entirely in good terrain, then not affected.

This is different from movement, where any part of the base in terrain affects the UG for movement.

Is there a definitive ruling on terrain with respect to shooting, or do we simply apply the same principle - that is, if the front line is out of terrain, all the the rear ranks shoot as if they were out of terrain. (So if the front edge of the file pokes out of a forest - everybody shoots.)
