PG 119
A charging UG may contract 1 file in order to avoid a friendly UG that's in it's way . While it is clearly stated that it must at least have 2 files wide, nothing is said about depth exept that "shiould they fail to make it into combat they reform into a legal formation as soon as space allows" which implies that it might go in an illegal formation !

So may a 9 base TUG enter one rank and have 5 ranks depth when charging instead of 4 ?

That definitely seems to be the intent.

The 4 ranks restriction doesn't apply in melee combat.  I had an 8 base TuG, 2 wide and 4 deep and then used a MF1 move to move 3 bases in one file to add to the 4 bases in the second fille.

Ok got it

"should they fail to make it into combat they reform into a legal formation as soon as space allows" which implies that it might go in an illegal formation !

So this means a 'deep' illegal formation is allowed after a charge that failed contact and stay this way  till (mandatory) it gets space again (which in theory could be for a couple of turns).

Will surely instruct my officers to remember this :).

Not really but as soon as space allows if you fail to make contact..so you must have space but it is mandatory

Huh, am confused now, what is not correct in my statement about mandatory reverting to a legal formation once space becomes available ?
Something lost in translation between 2 non native speakers ??

If the charge fails to make contact you must "reform" as soon as possible if you have space

While you are in combat you do not need to reform
