As Renatio et Gloriam rules are being finalised we thought it would be worthwhile putting out a statement on the boundary between the rules and the list sets.

There is no clear dividing line between Medieval and Renaissance periods.  From a practical wargaming perspective the boundary probably is best defined in the growing effectiveness and impact of gunpowder weapons.  The date at which this occurs varies in different parts of the world.  The rapid changes in warfare at this time make rule writing particularly challenging (as Alasdair can testify!).

In Western Europe this date can be taken as somewhere between 1475 and 1525.  In the Americas sub-Saharan Africa and some other parts of the world it can be defined as the arrival of substantive numbers of Europeans with gunpowder weapons.

The MeG list sets included armies which arguably fall into the ReG period because when they were developed the ReG rules were not available.  This includes armies in the Italian Wars set, Southern Mapuche (from the South America list set) and a few Asian lists.

We will review the boundary to coincide with the formal publication of the ReG rules.  In the meantime, the Southern Mapuche 2020.01 list may be used in 2021 tournaments at the discretion of the tournament organiser.
