Orb; so if I have a unit of 8 I can use Orb, the unit drops to 7 and it can't, and then down to 6 and I have Orb again?

The requirement to form orb is that all files must be at least 2 ranks deep (and you're >= 2BW from enemy TuGs), so if your 7 bases are 3-2-2 then, yes, you can form orb. More likely you're suffering shooting looses and you are 2-2-2-1, then no you couldn't form orb, and if suffering another loss puts you at 2-2-2 then, yes, you can form orb.

But on suffering another loss do you have come out of orb?

No. The "at least 2 ranks" is for forming an orb - when in an orb you are not forming it you are already formed.
