Nicked from Ray's suggestion in the comp section - that players should bring

a print out of the army from the pdf to show their opponent

With so many lists available it seems polite to bring a copy of the list your army comes from for an opponent to peruse if they should so desire.

Rules Queries / "Revealed shooters"
« on: February 07, 2019, 12:20:41 AM »
In a game tonight RJC and I came across a situation where we felt there may be some confusion from the rules around "revealed shooters".

Situation was thus:

Cavalry unit A is charging along the path indicated towards shooty cavalry B - the measuring stick indicates where contact will take place if B stands.

However, B being sensible, decides to Skirmish.

A's move will now continue towards C.

Rules say that if a response reveals a new shooter further down the path of the charge this file does not shoot (worth noting it is by file and not unit).

So is C being revealed by B's charge response?

Diagrams on pages 71 and 78 show the path of the charge to extend beyond the initial contact point - apply that logic to the picture and it appears C may not be being revealed.

Between us we have seen this played both ways  :o

I may reveal how we played it after seeing people's views  ;) :P 8)

Rules Queries / Clarification of a clarification request
« on: February 05, 2019, 08:39:14 PM »
The claries include the following:

Is allowed to get a free turn if you are prepared to take the risk, but troops so doing are considered to have done a shooting action and cannot shoot in the shooting phase (they just had no real target).

What is this about, what situation is it trying to clarify? I'm at something of a loss about it.

Just noticed that these are Drilled Loose - I would have thought that Drilled Close would be more appropriate given their role was something like the Byzantine menavtoi, otherwise they are something of a vulnerability.

I have a few bits and pieces in my unpainted pile that are surplus to requirtement - so wondering if anyone here is interested.

24 (3 packs) of Essex Spanish sword & bucklermen

3 strips (each 40mm long) of Essex Roman palisade

3 Baueda tents - see following pic.

If interested in any bits make me a sensible offer.

Rules Queries / Dismounting
« on: January 18, 2019, 10:32:47 AM »
Think I may have mentioned this before, but on the old forum just before we moved.

In the rules the section on Dismounting does not say what those with Mtd Polearm dismount as. OK, pretty obvious that it is likely to be Polearm but maybe worth mentioning for completeness and to avoid "that person" having an argument about it.

Also doesn't mention what happens with any missile capability - again seems obvious but as above  ;D

Using the Forum / Child board icons

Any chance the skull ikons for the child boards could be made smaller - due to their size the lines for the child boards waste a lot of screen space. The Player Discussion ones especially  :-[

Wondering what the brains trust think of this. Knocked up quickly as a potential for doing a Chinese army.

A minor inconsistency I didn't note when checking  :(

There is a line for "Tribal auxiliary cavalry" followed by one for "Upgrade light cavalry" - clearly this is an upgrade for the line above but the name is different.

Hardly an urgent one as it is quite clear what is intended  8)

List Queries / Northern Song infantry
« on: January 17, 2019, 10:52:12 AM »
I have been looking at the Later Zhou as a possible Chinese army to build, and as they transformed into the Song in 960 CE with Zhao Kuangyin's coup I have inevitably drfited into the Northern Song period as well.

This has made me wonder about the classification of the Northern Song infantry. I read that their formations were 1 rank of troops with a mix of spears, pole arms, etc, 3 ranks of crossbowmen and a final rank of archers. This feels more like classification in the Five Dynasties list (half SSp + Xbow, half Xbow) than in the Northern Song (all Pole Arm + Xbow).

Wondering why these are Formed Loose whilst all the other camlery in the Africa book such as the Tuareg is Tribal Loose?

Tribal feels right to me as they are not as good for military use as horses.

Also somewhat dubious about them having Melee Expert as they were defeated quite easily by Arab cavalry IIRC.

One I missed when checking - apologies to RJC  :(

The Gothic foot allowed from 360 CE should really have the same capabilities as the Tervingi/Gothic infantry in the Balkans, etc. list set - they currently are 2018 style.

List Queries / Sultanate of Rum
« on: January 03, 2019, 08:28:47 PM »
In the old (2018) list there was a Khwarazmian ally allowed for 1237 CE. I queried it on the list team forum thusly:

I cannot find the reason the Khwarazmian allies are only for 1237. I have found (secondary) reference to a group of Khwarazmians being employed in 1232 and supported by the incomes from iqta set aside for them. They fought for the Seljuqs in 1233 and 1234, but not in the defeat by the Mongols in 1243. I have not seen a reference to the Seljuks fighting in 1237. Maybe their dates should be 1232 to 1234?

Wondering if they are an omission.

New Lists / Heraklian Byzantine in Syria

A list I had previously posted on the old forum - as it isn't in the updated lists I thought I'd just pop it on the new forum in case anyone is still interested.

Obviously would need tweaking to accomodate some of 2019 changes such as Charge Only Shoot&Charge.

Modelling and Eye Candy / Arab infantry

Some recently completed Arab infantry for my ever growing Muslim collection. Figures by Donnington and many of the shields have transfers commissioned from Draco Standard. Happy with how they have turned out despite my limited skills - 24 bases done, another 24 to do ...
