List Queries / Hellenistic Spartan 2417 - Mercenary thureophoroi

Hello,

The list contains 2 identical lines for mercenary thureophoroi. Is it intended?

Antoine

Hello,

The Skirmishers are called "Light Horse Archers", but their upgrade option has them named as "Upgrade Skirmishing Horse Archers" (my emphases).

Given there are no other SK in the list, there is virtually no risk of confusion or sense of urgency, but I'll rather have it signaled here.

Best,
Antoine

List Queries / Thematic Byzantine 3317 - Allies listing
« on: May 30, 2024, 08:39:46 PM »
Hello,

The allies list Later Moorish as 2716, but Book 27 has them as 2717.

If the attack has enough energy to bypass a full armour, I doubt the energy loss from a light armor would be enough to make a difference, it does not seem coherent or realistic.

I stand corrected for artillery and will modify the first post accordingly.

My point still stands for others though, why would a musket ball do more damage to an Unprotected target than to a Protected one ?

Hello,

Some weapons ignore the effects of FArm (2HCC and Elephants in melee ; firearms and sometime crossbows/powerbows for shooting).

I guess this is because of the enormous energy and/or small area of application of the attack which means that wearing a full plate offers no benefit over a simple reinforced leather or small chainmail.

If so, I wonder how logical it is that these same circumstances lead to those weapons upgrading against Unprotected targets, where the upgrade compared to Protected stems from them being more vulnerable...

How is such a perforating attack more deadly to a naked Pict warrior than to a Viking huscarl ?

Best,
Antoine

EDIT : I removed references about artillery, which were irrelevant

List Queries / Knights in mixed formations - Dismounting discrepancies
« on: April 09, 2024, 12:20:04 PM »
Hello,

Several lists have knights in mixed formations, with front rank ArmHrs/FArm and back rank(s) Protected. Some of these lists also provide the option to dismount them with front and back ranks all being FArm (for example lists 7103 Later Burgundian, 7110 Italian States, 7112 Italian Wars Venetian).

However, lists 7104 Later French Ordonnance, 7105 Swabian League 7108 Maximilian German and 7109 German City States seem to be incoherent with this pattern:
  • 7104 has -/FArm back rank coustiliers that dismount as FArm (which seems logical), but there is also option to downgrade coustiliers as Protected without any impact mentioned on their dismounted protection
  • 7105, 7108 and 7109 are in another situation : their back ranks which are Protected as well dismount as Protected

Are these differences intended ?

Best,
Antoine

Hello,

The list has two compulsory troop types:
  • Camelry  (8-30) with the note: Camelry are only compulsory if any camels are used
  • Warriors (18-72) with the note: Warriors are not compulsory for allied contingents.
The list also lists Picked Warriors as a separate entry (not an upgrade from Warriors) with the note: A command may not have more than one TuG of picked warriors

I have two questions relating to using this army for an allied contingent:
  • Does this mean that a camel-less contingent has no compulsory troops?
  • Could an allied contingent take one unit of Picked Warriors without taking any Warriors?

Best,
Antoine

List Queries / Re: Ally from List 2717 later Moorish
« on: March 19, 2024, 03:19:48 PM »
Section 2.D.1 of rules (PDF p. 32) states that : Sub-generals can be allies with a dedicated command - the number and type of allies allowed for each army are shown in our army lists..

This has to be combined with the rule (non-contradictory, fortunately) at the beginning of each army book : [...]Unless specified in the notes, the general must be the same type as the army commander in their own army’s list but cannot be legendary. Usually this results in 1-3 UGs being compulsory and you having full flexibility on the rest. [...]

My read is that : the general commanding the ally, although with the same type as the Army Commander, is not an AC, but a Sub-General. Therefore he cannot command a unit reserved for AC.

Hello,

The army book lists Medieval Navarrese as allies, with army number 5814. In Book 58, Medieval Navarrese is referenced as 5816.

Best,
Antoine
