List Queries / Re: Almughavars impact weapon.

The Roman Pilum is a javelin.  it is thrown at a distance when charging and being charged the same as a charge only javelin only it costs more and has no effect if the target evades and you cannot reach him.

If they do not charge they just stand there and die if facing an horse archer army.  Also (And I may be wrong) I thought fleet of foot was reserved for unprotected loose order troops.  I like my Mugs but I could never take the Anatolian list.

I think that shoot and charge only javelin plus impact weapon is the best and most realistic option.  As they stand they are very good against foot but against mounted they do not stand much chance of winning the game.  If they are aggressive they are loose order foot charging mounted which nullifies the impact weapon and mounted have the option to break off.

I think Javelin and Shoot and Charge is a more realistic option.  The Lusitanians have the same type of javelin (iron with a barbed point) but they have not been changed to impact weapon.  As for terrain against the Turks in most of the battles (Aulax for example) the Turks were on ground of their own choosing.  At the moment with impact weapon and being unprotected while being fired on by green dice you are relying on your opponent having bad luck.

List Queries / Almughavars impact weapon.
August 15, 2023, 07:50:43 AM
Hi,
I was wondering why the javelins carried by Almughavars in Anatolia are reclassified as impact weapons?  In real life they defeated several armies
with a large mounted component but they cannot do that under these rules as mounted will always evade and impact weapons need to contact the enemy.  I have read several accounts of battles involving the Catalan company and they indicate that they would throw their javelins so as to disorder the enemy before charging in to fight hand to hand.

List Queries / Breton cav in the Viking list 3209
June 19, 2023, 05:23:05 AM
Hi,
What is the rational for the Breton Cav in the Viking list not having short spear or lance in the list but are still dev chargers.  Also you mention Breton Cav having feigned flight in the definition of feigned flight but then you say they have to be a Sug or flexible Cav and Breton Cav are not flexible.

Are the guard infantry in the Tang central lists two separate units or are they combined with the bow short spear melee expert front rank and the bow melee expert rear rank.

Player Discussion / Re: Elephants and terrain.
September 26, 2022, 01:54:21 PM
The elephants in the north of Africa are of the Sub Saharan variety as opposed to the bush elephants that live to the south and did not actually live on the mountains but in the areas around them.  Elephants can climb a mountain using a road but even then Hanibal lost most of his along with half his army.
It is the fact that under our rules elephants count rocky ground as good going that I do not agree with.  Humans do not count it as good going but elephants who would have much more trouble traversing it do.

Hi,
I cannot understand why elephants count rocky ground as good going.  They cannot actually lift their front feet more than 40-50cm and find any rock very difficult to climb.  We had it in England where an elephant tried to climb over a wall about 45cm high and it tripped over it.

Rules Queries and Clarifications / Bounded fields.
December 29, 2021, 03:10:22 AM
My main opponent, and the only one in our club who knows the rules, is of the opinion that if you place a village then you can place a boundaried field any where.  Fair enough.  He is also of the opinion that if your opponent places a village you can place a boundaried field.  Is that right.

This may have been answered already but I cannot find it. If mounted are charged in the flank by foot do the mounted get the +1 for the "foot not standing to receive"?

Rules Queries and Clarifications / Re: Visibility

As vines themselves do not provide cover I would imagine that what gives a unit cover is the wall or fence around the field much like a boundaried field.  That would explain why vineyards are not classed as a wood.

List Queries / Viking cannot have mixed tugs
March 05, 2020, 12:02:36 PM
Hi,
In the British lists Anglo Danish can have mixed Tugs but the Vikings cannot.  Is there a reason for that as it curtails the effectiveness of Vikings facing historic opponents.
