Player Discussion / Warlord Epic and MeG
October 14, 2024, 10:19:36 AM
Being a 28mm fan I took a big leap of faith and bought myself the Hannibal set from Warlord. I was somewhat chuffed to find the standard bases are 60mm wide. Having painted some of the figures up I am really looking forward to using them on a 28 mm battlefield. The visual effect of having 20 or 30infantry figures on a base instead of 4 is absolutely stunning.

The thing I must complain about with the changes is that they tempt me to new armies. I find the idea of making skilled javelins work as TUGs quite exciting. Luckily I've tempered my enthusiasm for James IV at the thought of painting 400 pikemen.

Is there anyone in PMB interested in MeG? There are three of us who play. We have 28mm and 15mm and are able to play Maximus in either. Also more than happy to play Pacto or Magna.

Essentially you are saying as written the MF moves are legal before charge combats are fought. Though as intended not. The intention makes sense.

I just wish there were tournaments I could draw up lists for. No such thing is this neck of the woods.  :-\

Player Discussion / Re: Flank March what are the odds
September 27, 2022, 02:57:32 PM
Only time I've used a flank march was before I'd read the rules properly. Sent two units of Pictish chariots around Simon's flank. Clearly ignorance has its benefits. They arrived and charged into Simon's  rear. Unfortunately with half a base to break Simon's army, he broke mine.

The issue that I have is that it seems better for my tribal troops to close up and fight Romans in the open rather than fighting in rough terrain. Counter intuitive to my mind. I like the automating of changing - it's not like troops would need an order to spread out in a wood or that tribal wouldn't rush together in the open.

Having finally finished my Picts (not really- still have a proxy TuG), I've started on some 100 Years War French with Scots allies. Here are my first figures - all Perry and ready for Pacto.

A few days ago I fielded my 28mm Picts against Early Imperial Romans. Given my flexible and loose army I decided on lots of terrain. In our post battle debrief, while ensuring some rather good wine was not wasted, we felt that given the size of the Picts 9x9 base + 2x6 base infantry and 2 chariot TUGs my best option would have been bare terrain so I could move rapidly onto the Roman flanks while holding back my centre. I know we are fairly ignorant of actual Picts but it does seem strange that the rules would encourage a barbarian army to fight Romans in the open. Were we missing something? (We've both been playing ancients since the early 80s ) so have a bit of experience and dare I say it - expertise.

I suspect 9.4M 2.1 second bullet rules this out. You must "wheel as a whole" into melee combat.

List Queries / Macbeth as king
April 18, 2022, 08:55:36 PM
The Scotland section of the introduction to Kings in the North says Malcolm defeated Macbeth in 1040. That is the year in which Macbeth ascended the throne. He was defeated in 1057 and his son Lulach in 1058, whereafter Malcolm ascended the throne.

Modelling and Eye Candy / Alexandrian Macedonian 28mm

We've been in varying degrees of lockdown in South Africa since March 2020. This has been great for my painting. Here are some pictures of my Alexandrians which army I completed (if such a term can ever be true) during this period.

I've finally finished my last Pictish infantry unit. (Though I do have some Foot Sore crossbow armed figures)
