Morning,

I agree the recommended lists expand beyond the Punnic wars; the compromises were reached in order to not put off players with one army who may not come to an event with a super tight list selection as they didn't have the time or money to build something new.

In theory "Any Classical with any allies allowed in those lists is the official format"  but by asking players to bring armies om the enemies of the Republican Roman and Carthaginian armies we get a fairly broad spectrum of types of lists from Gallic Warband type to Hoplites.  Bring whatever build legal classic list you like that you will enjoy :)

The Carthaginians I had planned are a little later than they should be to be called "Punnic Wars"  but I should be able to.get a few more UGs to represent an earlier list and that was the sort of thing the group discussing what to select wanted to avoid for players who couldn't make thay switch.

As long as players are happy playing classical games then we are all good and first round we'll pair up traditional opponents so at least one game is nicely themed for as many players as possible.

Kind Regards

MeG at Beachhead 2022

Entoyment and Beachhead 2022 are proud to present: A Mortem et Gloriam Competition!

This event will be run over February 12th and 13th of 2020 at the Bournemouth International Centre and tickets 30 are available through the Entoyment Webstore  www.entoyment.co.uk please bring confirmation of your booking to make sure you can get into the show where wristbands are then issued.

Information on the wider Beachhead 2022 Event can be found at https://beachheadshow.co.uk/

Period and Theme

This will be a Classical Period event with any army allowed from the Classical Army Books.  If an army can take allies they are allowed to take allies from any permitted book listed. This will make the event very inclusive.

However, as a team on the South Coast a theme of the Punic Wars was suggested.  At the bottom of the event flyer are extracts from the Mortem Et Gloriam: Historical Enemies PDF and if you have an army which is included on those extracts then it would be fantastic if you could theme your entry army list!  However, if that isn't possible and you have another classical army, please still come along!

Army lists must be sent to james.mcmeiken@gmail.com by the 4th of February for checking.  As James will be checking the lists if you play him on one of the days he'll show you his list before the game.

The Competition

There will be four, three hours 10,000 point Maximus games played over the two days, one on each morning and one on each afternoon.  Where possible we will work in time to ensure you don't need to rush a game to wonder around the show as well.

The first round will be drawn randomly from pools of historical enemies. Rounds two to four will be drawn using the Swiss system drawn from the whole player group. Scoring will be as per the standard scoring for MeG competitions as outlined in the rulebook.

Things to bring with you

Whilst we only need half the players to bring a mat, if you can please bring a 6'x4' mat with you to ensure we have enough to cover the tables.

Please remember your own terrain and game aids too and at least one copy of your army list.

Prize Support

Prize support for the event will be provided by Entoyment and usually comes in the form of vouchers. More information on what prizes can be won will be provided closer to the event however; where we can Best Painted and Most Sporting Player are prizes we are always keen to reward as well as prizes for placing at the top of the competition!

Timetable Both Days

8:30 Players and event organisers arrive by this time and make sure tables and mats are in place

8:45 Player Briefing

9:00 Game 1 Starts

12:00 Game 1 Ends (at end of current turn) and Lunch Starts

13:00 Game 2 Starts

16:00 Game 2 Ends

(After this point the show is still open)

16:30 End of Day Tidy and or Prize Giving

Useful Information

The Bournemouth International Centre has its own car parks but several local outdoor car parks are close by. There are busses from the train station directly to the BIC.  There is some food served at the BIC and a number of restaurants and cafes and fast food chains are located a short walk away.

For those making a weekend away with their family, the Gardens, Beach, Shopping and Cinemas are very close to the event building and Bournemouth has many hotels to suit almost any budget.

For those staying over in Bournemouth who like a good curry out on a Saturday night there is a fantastic place with a road with plenty of free parking on it.

Would the SuG have to move before the TuG in this case after it paid the card to charge?

As in if it moves first in charge order it makes contact but if the TuG moves first it evades? Or once the card is paid whoever moves first the combat occurs?

Kind regards

Thanks for the response,  I'm not adverse to that being the final clarification either works for me and there's no motive one way or the other.

My question on the first point you've noted is that it doesn't use that text which we're all familiar with from the army lists which also state specific phases relevant to the type of physical movement of the figures that is allowed. Therefore if that's the final clarification point 10 of the Battlewagon rules should be tightened up to say that if its the final ruling.

With the second point I totally agree that the standard rules for bursting through are very clear.  However, bursting through is defined as passing through and as above with point one we have a rule which does not confirm to the archetypal statements associated with the spirit you described. It's not so much a conflict as clarification on words used.

The rules for Battlewagons were in test not long before the compendium was printed and one of the testers agreed the result of the rules printed could indicate a greater freedom of passing through as there's no notes to specify in which phase.

You then hit a logic loop as passing through includes bursting through as the term passing through is used to define it. That would therefor follow as written that when in column nothing can burst through battlewagons and any evading unit that contact's them is destroyed or stops when contacting them (or could be caught as couldn't flee as far)  which then opens up a whole further can of worms. Everything else can burst through everything else meaning you'd need a new rule.

It needs an official carry I think to prevent that logic look and as you said to bring it into line with the other passing through special rules to say what is allowed and in what phases whether its more flexibility fleeing (or even charging in the charge phase) or just in the move phase.

Kind regards

Page 110 section 5 and 6 (with specific mention to 6.1 and 6.2)

Then Page 184 point 10.

Point 10 notes that any UG can pass through a battlewagon TuG in Line formation. It doesn't note whether that applies to the just the movement phase or to any phase, such as an UG evading a charge.

Page 110 defines bursting through as passing through,  it just adds extra effects if you are a mounted SuG or any TuG with KaB tests.

Can any UG evade through a TuG of Battlewagons in Line without causing a KaB as bursting through is a special type of passing through? (See key question above on point 10 of battlewagons)

(If no is the answer I may have further questions as to the implication of thay for the mechanics of battlewagons and "passing" in various forms

Kind regards

Not my point!  My point was that if you are going to run an open competition - don't randomly draw the first round, draw based upon the date of the army.

FWIW My view is it is always far easier to do a tournament manually instead of using a computer.

Richard

p.s. I am open to suggestions on how I fight a Later 100 Yrs War English with Mitanni.  I can't even hide up a forested mountain....

I wouldn't  be too worried I'm not that good!

Also you're far more mobile than most of my TuGs so can get around the sides

As its  a fun event I can promise  im not going to corner sit as that would be dull!

All lists are checked and good to go so... I did an independently adjudicated draw with some confused work colleagues

Round 1

Ian (Neo-Babylonian) vs               Lance (Almoravid)

James (Later 100 Years War English) vs RJC (Mitanni)

Nigel (Rajput Indian) vs Ray (Arab Conquest)

Cid (Hussite) vs Bruce (New Kingdom Egyptian)

Robin (Eastern Seljuk Turk) vs Nik            (Lusignan Cypriot)

Looking forward to Sunday!

Awesome, thanks for signing up!  We got another signup too so we are at at least 10 with two others unsure but maybe coming

I have already asked for more spaces and Pete at the shop says it's fine!

Morning,

Anything from the classical list books can't be used as the core of the force but can use used as allies... for example Median Empire from the Charriot Age could select its allies from a Classical Book

Anything else from any other period or region is fine, so any Asian, American or African lists that fall into the traditional dates for the classical period can be taken

As per Simon's suggestion there are alot of classical comps so it's as open as possible for taking anything else youd like to use

Kind Regards

Bookings are going well to get to 12 players already then. That's 6-7 already (possibly more, I'll check bookings with Pete) and still a month to go.

Looking forward to getting 100 years war English out of their box and trying the new mixed units.

Morning,

I'm James and split time between Bournemouth and Southampton, mostly Southampton at the moment but am still quite new myself.

If you want practice games though I'm sure we can work something out!

Welcome to the community!

Nigel and I often play at Sarisbury Wargames club just on the far side of Southampton on Thursdays and there are two other local MeG players who attend as well

I'm not adverse to travelling to Entoyment and booking a table at the weekends either in Poole.  Some of us have talked about a small one day mini comp there too.

If you like I'm happy to share contact info and I'm sure some of the other local players will reply too.

It's ok you'll be able to give me a kicking and show me how it's done!

How're you going to get the pikes next time?
#15
One and a half more TuGs to paint then I'm ready!

Went and brought heather tufts to make the bases look like the local hearts...
