Title: Anglo-Danes ..
Post by: IanN on November 03, 2019, 11:14:33 AM
Some questions on the Anglo-Danish list ..

1/ Re : "Huscarls in shieldwall, select fyrd and great fyrd may be mixed in the same TuG of 6,8, or 9 elements".  My interpretation is that a mixed tug must contain bases of each troop type ?  No proportion of each type is specified. Would be legal to use a TUG of 8 bases comprising 2 bases of Huscarls. 2 bases of select fyrd and 4 bases of great fyrd?

2/. Accounts of Hasting and Fulford describe the Anglo-Danes as launching a barrage of missiles/weapons at attackers; (including arrows and slingshot, plus stones, hammers, axes and 'anything' which could be thrown).  Does this justify integral archer option? and if so, how would it work if front ranks were Huscarls ?

3/. Accounts of Fulford Bridge describe Harold's army as 10,500 infantry and 2,000 mounted troops, (huscarls and thegns).  I interpret the Thegns as (Superior) household spearmen, akin to those of the earlier Anglo-Saxons; (and Scots). Justification for a single TUG of Superior spears. Plus should Huscarls and Thegns be given an option of Dismountable?

Thanks

1/.  No.  It doesn't say that.  They may be mixed in any combination.  That is intentional.

2/.  Use skirmishers in front of the Shieldwall to represent this.

3/.  I think your interpretation of Thegn is debatable.  I would argue Thegns - however they were equipped are represented either by Huscarls and/or Select Fyrd.  Huscarls are Dismountable.  I think there is an argument for reclassifying a TuG of Huscarls are Superior Select Fyrd but it would be a regrade, not an additional TuG for list balance.
