I don't think the chariots do fit the 40mm depth. :) I put my chariots on 50mm depth due to this issue. It also distinguishs between what are actually battle group bases and that which are commander bases on 40mm square. The base sizes for 25/28mm figures are are greater depth for chariots so I don't see why they shouldn't be for 15mm figures.

Depth isn't that important in MeG, no problem if the bases are a few mm deeper than the suggested depth in order to fit the models on.
