Title: Trojan War Lists
Post by: IanN on October 15, 2019, 10:38:25 AM
Am sure this will get me shot .... but to share some thoughts on the armies if the Trojan war .....

1/. Achaean Archers : the catalogue of ships in the second book of the Iliad lists the names and sizes of each of the twenty-nine contingents that sailed to Troy. Although contentious and suspicious in some detail, that only one contingent (700 men, under Philocrates and Medon) is noted as being (all) archers has not been challenged. The current figure of 12 archer bases seems excessive, and suggest this should be limited to 6.  Although stated as 'the best from all Greece', there seems no justification for Skilled; although Protected (as each man provided his own armour) seems reasonable.

2/. The Trojan army : the shorter "catalogue of the Trojans'  and their allies also appears in the second book of the Illiad. It lists sixteen contingents from 33 different locations; only a quarter of which were identified as Trojan.
The Iliad states that the Trojan army included spearmen, archers (regarded as the best of the army) and some chariots. The Apollonian Guard were the most experienced soldiers of the Trojans. They were led by Poludamas, and were destroyed in the first battle of the Trojan War, when Hector and Poludamas led the Apollonian Guard against Achilles and his Myrmidons when they raided the Grand Temple of Apollo. The rest were wiped out in a final stand at the Citadel of Troy. Archers were available in significant numbers, and frequently provided covering fire from the city walls. There are references to their skill and ability; hence an option for 'skilled' ugrade. Troy was famed for its wealth, so armour and similar would be readily available, hence any troops may be armoured/protected.
The remainder of the army has been referred to as 'Asiatic' or fighting 'in the Asiatic manner'; which I interpret as a looser order, with short spear and javelins; except for the Lycians (charging warriors comparable to Myrmidons), Paeonians (archer) and Pelasgians and Ciconians (spearmen).
As for proportions; Agamennon claimed that the Greeks outnumbered the Trojans (not including their allies) by over 10:1; (implying quite low number of Trojans); and later (Book 8) the Trojans are described as having over 1000 campfires. I interpret that the majority of the army was allies.
My interpretation for the Trojan army is ...
Commanders :
Army Commander : Hector (Instinctive Talented)
Sub-Commanders : Aeneas (Instinctive Talented Competent);  Paris (Instinctive Mediocre)
                                 Others (Instinctive Competent or Mediocre)
Ally Commander : Rhesus or Polymestor (Instinctive) – Thracians only

Trojan Heroes/Chariot borne troops – see below,           4-8, TUG : 4/6
Trojan Apollonian Spear : Inf FC, Sup, Prot, Short Spear.      0-6, TUG : 4/6
Trojan Spearmen, Inf FC, Avg, Prot, Short Spear         6-18, TUG 6,8.9
Trojan Archers, Inf FL, Avg, Unprot/Prot, Exp-Bow         0-12, TUG 6
Upgrade Trojan Archers to FL, Sup, Prot, Skill-Bow         upto 6

Pelasgians, Ciconians : Inf FL, Avg, Short Sp,             0-12, TUG : 6,8.9
Thracians: Inf FL, Avg, Short Sp, Unskill-Jvs            0-18, TUG : 6,8,9
Lydians, Inf FL, Prot, Dev Ch                  0-9,  TUG : 6,8,9
Other 'Asiatics', Inf FL, Avg, Prot, Short Sp, Unskill-Javs      12-26, TUG : 6,8,9
Plus skirmishers as per list.
There must be at least as many non-Trojans TUG's as there are Trojan TUG's. The Trojan army may better be referred to as an army of the Assuwa confederation or coalition; with more allies than Trojans who fought under their own leaders but where commanded by Trojan nobles/warriors.

3/. Chariots. There are no chariot combats in the Iliad. Chariots were used to transport warriors, nobles, commanders (wanax) only; they were not used to attack like other contemporary chariot nations.  All chariots should be redefined as Formed Loose, Superior, Prot, Short Spear, Dismountable (Option Mele Exp?).  Additionally when making a retire/break-off move they should be permitted to move at Light Chariot speed – as that is what they did.

4/. A totally conjectural thought – if Mycenaean spearmen and some Dark-Age Greek spearmen used integral archers; why are they not permitted for the Trojan war. Maybe an option for a limited number of TUGs

Ideas for thought ..

I agree with the integral shooters, especially the Greater and Lesser Ajax working together...
Also, Trojans should count theor camp as exceptional fortified? ;)

Achilles not formed to have other spearmen, Makes my original Warfare army 'legal'.

Trojan list - totally revamped as suggested above. Absolutely fabulous. Totally chuffed  :) :)
Now to find some artwork to match ... and find suitable figures.
So happy i could smile

But the lack of Trojan chariots! 😱😉

Still waiting in the Trojan compulsory exceptional fortified camp that MUST be deployed in a town...

Lack of chariots in Trojan forces - spot on. Only mentioned for Trojans themselves.

Exceptional camp - sounds good - will the city walls fit in a 120 by 80 base ???  a challenge
