Forgive some probably basic questions, but my buddy and I are playing through the learning sequence, and I might from time to time pop in here to ask what will probably be basic questions [but to us newbies....they are head scratchers]. First up, when a Devastating Charger unit is themselves charged by a non DC unit, do they claim the DC +2 benefit [against enemy foot], if they stand and receive? Or, do they have to declare a counter charge in order to get the bonus +2? Does a skull result cause a shatter in melee or just in the charge phase. We looked for both these in the rules and on the QRS, but probably overlooked it . Thanks in advance.

They do not need to counter-charge to claim the benefit. All troops "standing" to receive a charge are assumed to charge in the last few yards if appropriate.

Shatters only ever occur in the charge phase. Shoves can occur in both charge and melee phase combats.
Richard
Just to add to Richard's comment, Shatter and Shove are defined in the Characteristics document - always worth a look there.
Also its at the bottom of general claims.
If a claim isn't on either chart you can't get it.
Never easy to see everything when getting started at any game.
Just post anything else here.
Always happy to help.
