Title: Looking for Ideas on a Campaign Game I'm Playing
Post by: sppenn on June 23, 2019, 03:14:55 AM
Because of work, I have not been able to get with friends to game lately.  I got a copy of Al Nofi's Imperium Romanum back in November and have slowly read the rules and started playing it solitaire. (Here is a link to the board game on BGG: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/263301/al-nofis-imperium-romanum)

I chose the scenario of Trajan invading Dacia in 101. I have Romans and Dacian 15mm figures. In the game, it's May and Trajan launched his invasion. A Dacian general took a large force south seeking to cross the Danuvius River and sack some Roman cities.  He didn't get far before Trajan intercepted him; about 100 miles north of the river.  A battle will be fought in the woods in southwest Dacia.

Trajan is a +3 leader (very high in the game) with 3 legions, 1 light infantry unit, and 1 cavalry unit. He also has a baggage train.  The nameless Dacian is +1 with 2 legion equivalents and 2 light infantry units and a half empty baggage train.

According to the board game's rules the unit scale is 2,500 to 5,000 soldiers per legion and the cavalry and light infantry are treated as 1/2 legion equivalents.  One turn is a month.  And one hex is 50 miles across. Trajan's soldiers have a rating of 'A' (best in the game), while the Dacians have a rating of 'B'.  (The worst rating in the game is 'C'.)

I've thought about setting this battle up for a MeG game. Trajan is the invader.  There is potential for a light rain in May, say 25% chance?  But, I haven't settled on other factors, which leads me to ask for advice on this forum.

How many MeG points per legion (heavy infantry counter) for building the armies?
How many MeG points for the cavalry counter and the light infantry counters?
How many advantages do I give Trajan for being a +3 leader and how many does the Dacian commander get for being +1?
How should the ratings of A and B factor into a MeG game?

I have some ideas on how to proceed, but any thoughts/advice is appreciated.

I think all those factors are covered in the rules and army lists.

Not sure about rain, haven't used the MeG weather system.

Why don't you start with one of the campaigns created for MeG and get a feel for it. Simon Clarke has done some and I'm sure there are some on the website.

Cheers

Blimey, Imperium Romanun, that takes me back - I have IR 2 buried away somewhere  :)

Not a bad idea for a campaign system.

IIRC commanders are +0, +1, +2 or +3 so they map nicely onto Mediocre, Competent, Talented and Legendary for cards. However, you'd need to add sub-commanders to that for a MeG game - maybe just randomise it something like roll a die, 1-2 Mediocre, 2-5 Competent, 6 Talented (max 1 talented subbie). Not sure how you might decide on how many subbies though - could just depend on the size of MeG game you end up with.

Same sort of applies to the points question - what sort of size game do you want?

Cool and not hard to adapt IMO.

How many MeG points per legion (heavy infantry counter) for building the armies?
I generally think of 12 bases as a complete legion. Usually in 2 TuGs of 6.
So would suggest basing it around that.

How many MeG points for the cavalry counter and the light infantry counters?
I think their basics are about right so probably 6 or 8 per counter.

How many advantages do I give Trajan for being a +3 leader and how many does the Dacian commander get for being +1?
Suggest Legendary vs competent is about right.  Give them both 2 Competent sub generals.

How should the ratings of A and B factor into a MeG game?
Superior Romans vs Average Dacians.

BUT then you need to be quite livberal with the idea of Legion equivalents.  By far the best way as it is well tested is to use the same points as a Superior Legion to create Dacian foot troops.  Likely to give you 3x9 per counter I suspect.
