Title: impassable terrain
Post by: badhabum on June 01, 2019, 05:13:12 PM
When choosing terrain, you may/must take some terrain, difficult or rough. But how many special terrains ? deep water, impassable hill or terraced hill ?

IMO as many as you are allowed of "Any" items - as they are not Rough or Difficult on the terrain table.

Does make Terrained Hills a bit odd as they count as Rough or Difficult but are Special. Not sure that is intended ...

I believe the intention is that for Normal - the two compulsory pieces should be "Any but Impassable".

All the optional items you choose could be Impassable terrain items in Normal, Dense or Very Dense terrain. Note however that they are lost in the Central sector.
Terrained hills are either Rough or Difficult depending on the terrain selected with the hill.

I seem to recall that being mentioned before. Its certainly odd as it stands.

Yes but where is it written ?

I am a men of : the intention is good

But if as referee I have to answer, usually you get a : where is it written ?

On the PBS sheet.

Exactly as written unless I have msised something...
Says (no Difficult or Impassible).

Specials are never used as a category perse.  Rough hills are the type of the terrain on them as per "Description and Depiction".
So you can't have a hill with Forest if you can't have a Forest.

Sorry,

The PBS sheet is not that clear.

It says

Very Dense  2 difficult, 2 rough  Up to 3 any
Dense 1 Difficult, 2 rough
Normal 2 any

Nowhere are "special" terrains mentioned

You have to go to Open to find a 1 (no Difficult or Impassible ) as mandatory terrain .

So in very dense I could not take "Impassible" terrain as I am limited to Difficult and Rough, except if I have the word "any"

But in Normal terrain as mandatory terrain I could take "Impassable" terrain as I may choose "any"

So are "impassable" and "Special" terrain difficult ? or Rough  ? or Any ?

I think you are trying to read more into it than is there.
And the way I have done combined hill/terrain is worth changing perhaps.
And my last explanation was too vague so here goes ....

Very Dense

Compulsory is 2 Difficult and 2 Rough. So can't take a special for those as doesn't say so.
Only items that are in the Difficult or Rough categories.
Optional items = up to 3 of any so you take anything from Special as well for those.
Including a special hill that has rough or difficult on it (again it restricts the numbers of these multi type terrain features).
So you can have Impassible, but not as a compulsory item. Deliberately to limit their size.

Open

Compulsory is 1 item with no Difficult or Impassible. So you can have one of rough or special other than impassible.
So you could have a single rough hill. Can't have a combined hill that has difficult on it, as it says "no Difficult" (that hill being both Special and Difficult).
But you can have a hill with Rocky ground (as it is Special and Rough).
Am ok allowing a bit more option for compulsory as terrain more limited so generals would search out whatever they could use.

Does that make sense now Jacques?

That was my conclusion but I needed it written so I can convince the others .

It came from a test game and one player wanted only impassable terrain  8)

So now we can explain  :D
