Title: New terrain and visibility
Post by: badhabum on April 13, 2026, 11:34:55 AM
The question was about ambushed, terrain and visibility .

My opponent, native english, wanted to put some ambushes in a wood, just 2 MU away from the middle of the table so at the edge or near the edge of the wood on his side .

He was lessthan one BW in the woods, but just over 2 MU from the middle of the table.

The discussion was : He argued that as the rule is written, you needed to be at 2 MU from the UG so see it and that includes the open terrain distance .

The rule stipulates : All visible at 2 MU

My understanding is within 2 MU of the edge of the terrain you are visible even from "far away" as if in open but if you are in the terrain by 2,1 BW or more, your opponent should enter the terrains and get within 2 MU from you ?

What is the correct way to interpret it ?

A clarification might be needed

An UG entirely in a wood is visible at 2BW, not if they are 3BW!  You cannot shoot at them if you are more than 2BW away from them.

I have had people argue the same issue about crests (both hills and gullies, dead ground, gorges).  Across a crest you are visible at 2 BW, not if you are 3 BW away.

So as long as the UG was entirely in the wood and more than 2 BW from the centre line, then they are in ambush.

p.s. If I have said differently, I was wrong!  I make mistakes. Being infallible would be such a bore.

It is a very common question and one we have flagged as probably easily assisted with by adding a simple diagram in the future.
